The Homecoming Court – which was announced Friday at the school’s homecoming pep rally – led a motorcade of Mount Vernon alumni, staff, students and administrators through the city on Saturday, Oct. 18, before the Knights fell to the Ossining High School Pride 18-16, despite a furious fourth quarter comeback.
The motorcade traveled west down California Road toward Columbus Avenue, before making its way toward Devonia and Gramatan avenues. It then proceeded south onto Fourth Avenue before eventually concluding at the high school gymnasium parking lot.
“Homecoming is the ultimate expression of community pride,” Schools Superintendent Kenneth Hamilton said before the event. “Our students are excited about the event, and our staff is preparing for a successful celebration.”
Despite the loss, the day was still special for fans of the Knights, with a halftime tribute honoring 2007 graduate Rodney Mack, who quarterbacked the team to the Class AA championship game in 2004. A former member of the Mount Vernon Fire Department who had roles in three films, Mack died following a lengthy battle with brain cancer earlier this year.
“Rodney was an inspiration to so many people in our community,” said Severin Cornelius, Mount Vernon football coach. “It was a devastating loss felt by our whole organization, and we wanted to honor his legacy this year and acknowledge his impact on our school and community.”
