According to the school district, the school was evacuated shortly before 11 a.m. as a precaution, though it is believed that the call was a hoax. Police and fire officials responded to the school, but found no evidence of any danger. Detectives left the scene shortly after noon.

An hour after the initial scare, staff members were back working in the building, though students were sent home as part of a regularly scheduled professional development day. Secondary students were set to be dismissed at 11:30 a.m., but many had to wait to gather their belongings from inside the school. Elementary school students were let out at noon.

Inquiries to the Mount Vernon Police Department were not immediately returned.
