Mount Vernon Gets Grant To Serve Breakfast At School

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – Former New York Giant great Amani Toomer will visit Mount Vernon next week to congratulate the school district for a grant it received through the NFL’s Fuel Up To Play 60 Campaign.

The Mount Vernon School District will receive a $300,000 grant to serve breakfast in the classroom.

The Mount Vernon School District received $292,000 from Fuel Up To Play 60 that will allow it to serve breakfast in Lincoln Elementary School classrooms during the coming school year.

Fuel Up To Play 60 is a national school wellness program that was created by the National Dairy Council and the NFL. It encourages schools to adopt programs that increase the access children have to healthy food and opportunities for physical activities.

There will be a special event celebrating the launch of Breakfast in the Classroom at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at Lincoln Elementary School. There will be school and city officials, as well as representatives from the American Dairy Association and the NFL.

Aisha King, of the Fuel Up to Play 60 program, will speak at the event, praising the school for getting involved with the American Dairy Association and explaining the benefits of the breakfast program.

There will be a sample breakfast delivered to a classroom of students by Toomer. The receiver will then speak to students about the importance of starting each day with a nutritious meal.

Due to the school district’s commitment to ensuring that students have a healthy breakfast each morning, the dairy association plans to restyle the cafeteria of Mount Vernon High School.
