Bronxville’s Sarah Lawrence Hires New Athletic Director

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – With Sarah Lawrence College looking to place more of an emphasis on recruiting, the Bronxville school has hired Kristin Maile to head its athletic department.

“In the past, there’s been a big emphasis on physical education,” Maile said. “But my focus is going to be on the athletic side of things as we move forward with the NCAA.”

As a Division III school, Sarah Lawrence has always been proud of balancing academics and athletics, Maile said. That won’t be lost in her program. “This is a place where people can come in and play immediately instead of being on the bench somewhere else,” she said. “We will always have our main focus as academics so being in Division III allows us to do that and provide that balance for students who want to play sports and do other things.”

Maile also wants to recruit from the community. “Certainly if you can start building that local reputation and draw from the area, it’s a benefit for everyone,” she said. “We would get more parents involved and more fans involved if we had that local draw. So it's definitely important to us."

Before accepting the position at Sarah Lawrence, Maile spent six years as director of athletics at Cedar Crest College in Scranton, Pa. During her time there, Cedar Crest achieved the Colonial States Athletic Conference’s highest combined GPA in back-to-back years.

Maile also spent seven seasons as the University of Scranton’s volleyball coach and won coach of the year honors in 1999 and 2001.

Sarah Lawrence is a great fit, Maile said. “I was definitely drawn to this school and to the area,” she said. “Being close to New York City is exciting, and being part of the area of Bronxville and Yonkers is a great area to be in. I really enjoy the building process, and I’ve been in Division III my whole life so this was a draw for me.”

In addition to being more aggressive in recruiting in the area, Maile said she will create opportunities to connect with Bronxville and Yonkers. She plans to work with youth programs and develop sports clinics for locals.
