Polls Open for Lakeland to Vote on Budget, Trustees

MOHEGAN LAKE, N.Y. - Residents in the Lakeland School District will be going to the polls Tuesday to vote on a $157 million budget for the 2012-13 school year, two propositions and board of education candidates.

Voting will take place from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Van Cortlandtville Elementary School on Route 6 in Mohegan Lake, across from the Cortlandt Town Center.

The budget is similar dollar wise to the current spending plan but eliminates six full-time positions, two part-time workers and the peer mediation program at Lakeland Copper Beech Middle School.

The tentative tax rate changes differ for the six municipalities in the district. In Westchester, taxes are slated to rise 1.7 percent in Somers, 2 percent in Yorktown and 3.2percent in Cortlandt. In Putnam, Carmel will experience a 5.6 percent hike and Philipstown a 0.4 percent jump while Putnam Valley will see a 0.7percent decrease.

The two propositions voters will decide are authorizing a tax levy increase of 2 percent and purchasing four, 30-passenger school bus vans, two Suburban-style bus vans and seven full-size buses not to exceed a little more than $1 million. The district is reimbursed 56 percent by the state for the cost of the buses.

Also on the ballot are four candidates seeking three available seats on the board, which are unpaid, volunteer positions. Running for three-year terms are incumbent trustees Carol Ann Dobson, James Carroll Jr. and Brian Hugick, all of Cortlandt, and Mohegan Lake resident Robert Rodriguez, an assistant superintendent of human resources in the East Ramapo School District.
