Artists Set Up a Holiday Shop

Shoppers will have the option of a handcrafted or artistic gift thanks to a gallery opening for the holiday season in downtown New Canaan. The gallery is courtesy of New Canaan potter George McEvoy, his wife, Heidi, a painter, and several fellow artists.

“It’s a labor of love for all of us,” said the 71-year-old McEvoy, who lives on Seminary Street. “None of us is getting rich. We want to expose this type of work to the community. It’s all hand-crafted or drawn. We’re trying to bring something to the community that’s not here.”

The Gathering For Potters and Artists gallery opens Friday at 5 East Ave. An opening reception will be held from 6 to 9 p.m., coinciding with the annual New Canaan Chamber of Commerce Holiday Stroll.

Shoppers will find pottery by McEvoy and Stephen Rodriguez of New Haven, prints and books by Ann Lindbeck of Hamden, sculpture by Rodriiguez's wife Jilaine Jones of New Haven, and drawings by Heidi McEvoy.

In previous years, McEvoy sold his pottery from his home studio. Thanks to the generosity of developer Arnold Karp, the potter and his fellow artists will use the downtown location for a second consecutive year.  McEvoy said he began transforming clay into pots as a hobby when he was 24. Over the years, he has sold more than 3,300 pieces.  “It’s all a pleasure,” he says of making pottery. “When I go to the studio, I turn on the music and four hours could pass and I would think it’s an hour.”

The gallery will be open from Thursdays from noon to 9 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m.
