According to a poll worker at City Hall, there have been more voters turning up than at recent elections. The results will determine which of seven candidates will fill three vacant City Council seats.
Incumbents Yuhanna Edwards and Roberta Apuzzo, along with former Counci lmember Marcus Griffith are being challenged by newcomers Andre Bailey, Maria Caraballo, Damon Jones and Damaris Mone.
“This is one of the most important elections in recent memory. There have been a lot of complaints, and this is our chance to start making some changes,” Washington Street resident Lee Frank said as he left City Hall. “I hope the people of the city come out and make their voices heard.”
Polls opened at 6 a.m. this morning, and will close at 9 p.m., with results becoming available shortly thereafter. Things peaked early at around 7 a.m., before people made their way to work, and poll workers expect another surge before polls close as residents come home from work.
“It’s usually pretty cyclical. You get a rush before people head to work, at lunch when they have a break and then late when they go home,” she said at approximately 3 p.m. “We should get busy again before this thing is over.”
