Mount Vernon Teen Sentenced For Rape, Criminal Sexual Act

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – A Mount Vernon teenager has been sentenced to an indeterminate term of between three and a third to 10 years in prison according to Westchester County District Attorney Janet DiFiore.

In July, Javon Roberts, 16, pled guilty to felony counts of first-degree rape and first-degree criminal sexual assault after he attacked two victims, one of which was an 11-year-old girl.

Roberts abducted his first victim at knifepoint, when he attempted to rape her on Monday, Oct. 20 last year, DiFiore said. Determining that he was too exposed to the public, he brandished his knife, forcing his victim to Grimes Elementary School in Mount Vernon, where he forced her to perform oral sex on him and anally sodomized her.

The suspect returned to Grimes Elementary on Dec. 4, this time to an 11-year-old girl who was walking home from a Christmas concert at the library shortly after 8 p.m., according to DiFiore. He forced the child to perform oral sex at knifepoint before raping her in a stairwell.

According to DiFiore, when the child yelled in pain during the two-hour attack, Roberts warned her to “Shut up, or I will kill you.”

It looked as if Roberts would get away with his crimes a second time, but after he was brought in for an interview with police regarding an unrelated case, a water bottle he drank from was turned over to the Westchester County Crime lab, which was able to link him to the two attacks.

Despite being tried in criminal court, Roberts is considered a juvenile offender because he was less than 16-year-old when he committed the crimes.

“The brutal and violent acts this defendant perpetrated against these two victims, one an 11-year-old girl, belie the courage displayed by these women in coming forward,” DiFiore stated. “Additionally, excellent detective work and forensic analysis led to this defendant being held accountable today for the depraved crimes he committed.”
