Congressman Eliot Engel, a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, has secured an $84,000 federal grant as part of the Body Worn Camera (BWC) Policy and Implementation Program to purchase body-worn camera for the Mount Vernon Police Department.

According to Engel, the program will help the Mount Vernon Police Department develop, implement and evaluate a BWC program as part of a comprehensive, problem-solving approach to build closer relationships between police and the community.

Engel noted that by issuing body worn cameras to officers working on the streets, it can help increase transparency within the department.

“The implementation of body cameras by local law enforcement is a common sense way to improve community relations,” he said. “I am pleased these federal funds will be utilized in Mount Vernon to keep our police and citizens safe.”
