Mount Vernon officials have cautioned residents to be on high alert, as the Police Department’s Patrol Division identified an auto theft pattern that has been plaguing the city recently, prompting them to remind residents to always lock their cars and to never leave keys or key fobs inside an unoccupied vehicle.

According to Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Thomas, criminals have been targeting Honda and Acura vehicles that were manufactured in the 1990s. Thomas said that all patrol units have been instructed to have heightened awareness to these types of vehicles following several reported break-ins.

Thomas noted that homeowners can help their own cause by locking their vehicles, keeping windows up, hiding valuables and purchasing an alarm system. He urged residents that see anything unusual or suspicious to contact the Mount Vernon Police Department at (914) 665-2500.
