Mount Vernon Man Charged After Throwing Animals Out Window

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – A Mount Vernon resident is facing charges that he assaulted a teenage girl with a belt before throwing her pet rabbit and Chinchilla out of a window, according to court records.

According to the Journal News, Nathaniel Sheppard, 41, is charged with felony counts of second-degree assault and animal cruelty. The rabbit broke a leg and had to be euthanized.

On Monday, Sheppard swung a belt numerous times at a 14-year-old girl, hitting her in the head, the records said. The victim suffered pain and irritation on her wrist, hands and face.

Sheppard was arraigned in Mount Vernon City Court on Tuesday and was held on $5,000 bail. He is due back in court on Monday.
