Mount Vernon Fire Spreads Smoke Around Area

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – Smoke was billowing over Cross County Parkway early on Wednesday afternoon as a fire tore through the top floor of a Mount Vernon building.

The fire has spread smoke both in Mount Vernon and surrounding neighborhoods.

Three Mount Vernon ladder trucks initially reported to the scene, but firefighters were forced to fight from outside due to the intense smoke and heat from the flames, fire officials said.

Mount Vernon police officers are currently diverting traffic in the area, while emergency medical workers standby on alert for any injuries.

As of noon on Wednesday, fire officials could not say what the cause of the fire was, or whether the blaze was yet under control. The structure is likely going to be lost.
