MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – Cleanup crews were hard at work in Mount Vernon on Tuesday, July 29, after flames tore through a North Terrace Avenue apartment in the morning.

Shortly before 11 a.m., the fire broke out in a first floor apartment in the Linden View Terrace building. By 3 p.m., the windows had been boarded, several charred windows were piled in front of the building and the air was clear of the scent of smoke.

According to fire officials, one firefighter sustained minor injuries battling the blaze. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The apartment was heavily damaged, but it is believed that after an extensive cleanup, the tenant who was displaced by the fire,  could potentially inhabit the space again.

The fire forced the brief closing of North Terrace Avenue.

Rosalia Morales, who was doing laundry at the complex said that the scene was cleared quickly.

“It was real quick, we were watching them and then they were gone,” she said late on Tuesday. “I think it looked worse than it was.
