According to Mount Vernon officials, a break on the 48-inch Kensico line that supplies water to Mount Vernon and northeast Yonkers led to the incident shortly before noon. Water pressure dropped nearly 70 percent for approximately an hour.
With the valves re-opened, it is expected to take several hours before pressure is fully restored, and in the interim, water may be discolored.
According to officials in Mamaroneck, which also experienced the low pressure, “if you should experience discolored water, it is safe to use, but do not do laundry or use hot water while the condition is present. To clear the condition, run cold water only, from a faucet at the lowest point in your home for a few minutes.”
