MOUNT VERNON, N. Y. -- Mount Vernon officials are dismissing a claim from a local activist that a suspicious fire that destroyed his car is somehow related to his criticism of city government, according to lohud.com.
Samuel Rivers, who woke late Friday to see his car in flames, said he believes it was done on purpose because of all the work he's done exposing corruption. A spokeswoman for Mayor Richard Thomas said those claims are false and an attempt to keep Thomas from his job changing the old ways of Mount Vernon government, lohud.com reports.
Police said they are investigating the fire as suspicious. Rivers said he could see the car fire from his Rockledge Avenue home, lohud.com says.
