Police: Mount Vernon Woman Unlawfully Got Jobless Aid

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – The New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation charged a Mount Vernon woman on Wednesday, Oct. 1, with unlawfully collecting unemployment benefits.

Melissa Smikle, 33, of Mount Vernon, was charged with third-degree grand larceny and first-degree falsifying business records, both felonies.  

After an investigation conducted jointly by the state Department of Labor and the state police, it is alleged that Smikle unlawfully collected over $6,000 in unemployment benefits between June and September 2012.

Smikle created false business records that stated she was unemployed while she was working. She was issued an appearance ticket and ordered to appear before the Mount Vernon City Court on Thursday, Oct. 9.
