Mount Vernon Referendum Includes Restoring Thornton Theater

MOUNT VERNON, N. Y. -- As part of a $108 million tax increase referendum for Mount Vernon schools, about $4.5 million would go toward renovations to bring the Joseph S. Wood auditorium at Thornton High School back to its former glory, lohud.com reported.

Nearly $5 million of a proposed $108 million bond referendum would be spent on upgrades to the historic Thornton High School auditorium.

Voters will weigh in on the bond referendum on March 15 that includes about $18 million for Thornton to make it an arts and entertainment learning hub, lohud.com said.

The 1,500-seat theater has a decorated history hosting performances including Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra in its 84 years.

Planned renovations include fixing warped areas of the stage and replacing seating, along with other upgrades, lohud.com said.
