Beginning Friday, street parking meters will cost a quarter for 15 minutes with a maximum parking time of two hours. Off-street lots, garages and long-term parking will cost a quarter for 20 minutes, with a maximum parking time of 12 hours.
Parking meters for short-term parking are located in retail areas and will be set for two-hour limits to encourage turnover in high-demand parking spaces.
Mount Vernon drivers will soon see an upgrade in single-space meter mechanisms in parts of the city. All meters are expected to be converted within the next six weeks.
The city is spending $180,000 to upgrade a total of 1,200 outdated, broken and obsolete meters. The funds became available through proceeds made possible from the sale of bonds.
The new rates will be strictly enforced. Motorists should read instructions on meters and pay attention to new time limits. Parking meters will be in effect from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.
