Starting on Friday evening, a maintenance shutdown on one of the city’s major water supply pipelines will result in the reduced pressure and potentially discolored water in local residences. The system is expected to be operating normally as soon as 8 a.m. on Saturday morning.
According to city officials, “the discolored water is caused by iron buildup in the pipes when water is cut back on.” Since discolored water may stain laundry, residents should not wash clothes until the water is clear. While the water may have a discolored look, it will meet all health standards.
Any inquiries about the shutdown can be directed to the Mount Vernon Board of Water Supply at (914) 668-78
