MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – A Mount Vernon playwright whose work was “inspired by the death of Trayvon Martin and other nameless black men,” is set to bring a production of his play, “Strings,” to the 2016 Atlanta Black Theater Festival .

Charles Curtis, who was born in Yonkers, debuted the play in December 2014 at New York City’s Shetler Studios, according to a statement from the production. The production has since completed a 10-week engagement at Manhattan’s Davenport Theatre and been performed at the Harlem Repertory Theatre’s Performing Arts Center. “Strings” is currently on a college tour.

According to the statement, the play, also directed by Curtis, is a “collision of a modern day vigilante, a lawyer with a hidden agenda and the strings that bind them both.”

“I wanted to give voice to the scores of men of color who die needlessly in this country - not just by those in uniform, but by our own hands," Curtis said. "I tried to challenge myself in writing this piece, something so unlike anything I’ve ever written.”

The festival is to be held in Atlanta between Oct. 6-15, but the “Strings” performances are not scheduled until Oct. 12 through 14, according to the statement.
