MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. -- A pair of Mount Vernon entrepreneurs have created a brand-new online portal, where students, not celebrities or sports figures, get to be the stars of the show.

Living High In-Style – which is the brainchild of Mount Vernon natives Nicola Haggins and Kay Starr – is an online magazine devoted to inspiring, motivating and guiding high school and college-age students.

The site is updated daily with contributions from teenagers, young adults, industry professionals and educators, all determined to motivate and incentivize positive behavior such as succeeding in school, being a contributing member of the community or avoiding a fight. There are articles that provide career advice, financial management tips and ideas for healthy campus living.

Starr said that the idea behind Living High In-Style spawned from an idea that a younger family member had.

“The magazine came about as an idea from Nicky’s niece, who felt there was a need for an organized place to share students’ needs, issues, successes, achievements and accomplishments,” she said. “A place where students were highlighted as stars, not just celebrities.”

Since its founding in January, Living High In-Style has rapidly grown. What was once just a staff of two now features 10 college and high school students who are regular contributors. In all, there have been more than 700 submissions, and due to its success, the duo plan to come out with a print edition.

“We’re happy to announce to our hometown that we are working on launching our magazine in print, with an amazing student featured on each cover,” Starr added. “It will be available in stores and online. We’re accepting article ideas, sponsors, talented photographers and hardworking students for consideration.”

In the six months since Living High In-Style launched, the founders have spoken at the World Girls Expo in Queens, the Mount Vernon GEM Program, Mount Vernon Proud Day and Monroe College Career Night. They were also featured as part of the new Student Scholar Program at the Macy’s Puerto Rican Day Parade.

“It is our mission to change the way we all view the world being 'In-Style.' With that in mind, we have created a movement and an organization that strives to encourage teens and young adults to understand that being 'In-Style' is not just about fashion and beauty,” the pair added. “Being 'In-Style' should also mean living a positive, inspiring, motivating and productive lifestyle.”
