Mount Vernon DPW Prioritizes Pothole Repairs Before Winter Weather

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. - With winter weather expected to return to the area in the coming days, the Mount Vernon Department of Public Works is prioritizing pothole repairs in an effort to alleviate the stress of city drivers.

Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Thomas announced on Tuesday that the DPW was set to emphasize repairs on city streets, with five crews scheduled to be dispatched over the next 48 hours to combat pesky potholes with a hot asphalt mix.

According to the Mount Vernon DPW, “potholes are created by fluctuating cycles of warmer and colder weather and, in many cases, can be attributed to the age of the city’s roads. (The DPW) prioritizes pothole repairs by several factors including severity of pothole, traffic and volume on street affected.”

Last year, the DPW estimates that more than 8,000 potholes were repaired. In 2016, Thomas said that the administration repaved 18 lane miles, versus just eight lane miles from 2013 to 2015.
