But his strong performances last month have established him as a serious contender in the 220-pound class of the upcoming Section 1 Large School Championships.

Watkins won three January tournaments and was a runner-up in a fourth, earning him selection as The Mount Vernon Daily Voice's January Student-Athlete of the Month.

Watkins opened January with a victory in the Scarsdale Tournament, his first tournament title. He followed up winning the Chris Hernandez Tournament at Yonkers and the Edgemont Tournament and closed out the month with a second-place finish in the Super 16.

Watkins, currently 20-2 on the season, competes this weekend in the Section 1 Large School Championships.
