MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. ? The Mount Vernon-based Hooperstown Huskies seventh grade boys basketball team recovered from an 11-point deficit Thursday to win the House of Sports Winter League Championship over St. John's.
The Huskies, who completed the regular season with a 9-1 record and earned the No. 1 seed in the playoffs, topped No. 3 Annunciation School 51-34 in the semifinals before defeating second-seed St. John's for the title.
Aundre Hyatt (Mount Vernon) and Deion Harrington (Middletown) led the Huskies' back from an 18-7 first-half deficit. Hyatt scored the game-winning basket to break a 27-27 tie with nine seconds remaining.
The Huskies seventh grade boys, coached by Mike Matthews, will be the top seed when they host their own Hooperstown Premier League Playoffs next week.
The team also includes; Tristan Duck (Middletown), Scott Galst (Scarsdale), Justin Lee (Scarsdale), Jonas Intner (Edgemont), Ethan Rohan (Yonkers), Daniel Gittings (Yonkers), Robert Farage (Yonkers), Amani Haynes (Peekskill), Kamani Haynes (Peekskill), Cooper Gray (Armonk), Ian Devine (Pelham) and Danny Friedman (Pelham).
Huskies Sixth Graders Complete Winter League Season
The Hooperstown Huskies sixth grade boys completed their regular season in the House of Sports Winter League with a record of 6-4. They lost to St. Peter's in the postseason semifinals.
The sixth grade boys host the Hooperstown Premier League Playoffs beginning next week.
The sixth grade Huskies are: Brett Robinson (Harrison), Brody Kimmel (Harrison), Max Brody (Scarsdale), Dylan Aresu (Scarsdale), Gus Thompson (Scarsdale), Harry Ravitz (Pelham), James Carey (Pelham), Truth Harris (Mount Vernon), David McDaniels (Armonk), William Lally (Ardsley) and Justin Lee (Scarsdale).
