MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. The Mount Vernon High School football team will try for its first win of the season when it travels to winless Pelham at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
The Knights lost 34-8 at Carmel in the season opener and then fell to Mamaroneck, 29-6, on Saturday. But they have fared slightly better than the Pelicans, who have yet to score a touchdown this season.
Pelham faced two powerhouse opponents in weeks one and two in Poughkeepsie and Somers, respectively. Poughkeepsie blanked Pelham, 33-0, in the season opener, and Somers followed suit with a 40-0 drubbing on Friday.
Mount Vernon allowed more than 150 rushing yards to Mamaroneck, so the Knights will need to shore up their run defense to earn the win.
Depth has been an issue for Pelham so far this season, and one of the Pelicans few bright spots has been senior fullback and linebacker Jon Miller. Pelham will likely try to use the ground game to wear out the Knights defense on Saturday.
