Hooperstown Boys Capture New Roc Basketball Title

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Mount Vernon's 10-under Hooperstown boys basketball program topped Team Connecticut, 27-22, Thursday to capture the New Roc Classic Summer Basketball title.

Hooperstown, coached by Mike Mathews, avenged two regular-season losses to the previously unbeaten Connecticut squad and finished the season with a 4-2 record. The Mount Vernon boys defeated Westchester-based Team 914 in Monday’s semifinals.

Hooperstown assistant coach Rasul Salahuddin, a former hoops star at Mount Vernon High and Long Beach State and in the European professional leagues, applauded his players’ team work.

“The team played exceptional today,” Salahuddin said of the title game. “They showed maturity, patience and what it means to be a team. I'm really proud of how they all grew as basketball players and young men the entire year. It was a pleasure coaching each and every one of them."

Former University of Connecticut star Rashamel Jones, a Port Chester native, also assisted Mathews.

The Hooperstown 10-under champions are Truth Harris, Michael Watson, Malik Salahuddin, Harry Ravitz, Michael Loguidice, Chris Devine, Gus Thompson, Bryan Adams, George Healey, Andrew Leisgang and Shamel Jones.
