This week, former Monroe College volleyball standout Hazel Ortiz Rosado became the first Mustang to break the ranks of a professional squad when she was signed by the Orientales to play in the Liga de Volleyball Superior Femenino.
In just two years with Monroe - 2012-2014 - Rosado stood out as one of the program’s finest, earning 2013 All-Tournament honors at the Pasco Hernando Tournament and the NJCAA National Tournament. She was the team MVP in 2013 and a second-team All-America choice before transferring to a Division-1 program at Bethune Cookman.
In her brief time with Bethune Cookman, Rosado rewrote the record books, becoming second in Wildcat history in career assists with 1,819 in just two seasons. She now is set to make her professional debut in her home country against the San Juan Capitalinas on Wednesday.
On Monday, Nepthali Delgado-Reyes, the head coach of Monroe’s women’s volleyball team marveled at the accomplishments of his former player.
“It’s an honor to reflect back on what Hazel achieved in her college career. Even before playing for the Mustangs, her dream was to become a professional player,” he said. “I’m proud to say that she will be successful as a professional player, because I know her work ethic and dedication is unmatched by all but a very few.”
