The Arts at Mount Vernon Presents High School Production of 'Dreamgirls'

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. -- The Arts at Mount Vernon will stage the musical "Dreamgirls" on Friday, April 29 and Saturday, April 30, at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday, May 1, at 3:00 p.m. in Mount Vernon High School’s auditorium.

The production of "Dreamgirls" will feature 30 students from Mount Vernon, Thornton and Mandela/Zollicoffer High Schools as cast and stage crew.

The production will be produced and directed by Evelyn Collins, Mount Vernon School district's director of Arts & Gifted and Talented Education; it will feature 30 students from Mount Vernon, Thornton and Mandela/Zollicoffer High Schools as cast and stage crew.

“There are tremendous benefits in providing children an opportunity to perform in theatrical productions,” said Collins. “These benefits include the development of strong cognitive, emotional and physical abilities, the fostering of collaboration, and the heightening of self-esteem.”

"Dreamgirls" is a Broadway musical, with music by Henry Krieger and lyrics and book by Tom Eyen. The musical is based on the show-business aspirations and successes of R&B acts such as the Supremes, the Shirelles, James Brown, Jackie Wilson and others. The plot follows the story of a young female singing trio called "The Dreams," who become music superstars.
