MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. Graham Elementary School will hold its Spirit Day Kickoff on Friday as plenty of school events across the Mount Vernon City School District begin for the 2012-13 school year.
Spirit Day will also feature a program titled "Operation Positive Role Model" where children are introduced to members of the community who are helping it. Longfellow Elementary School will hold a School Spirit Day as well for its students on the same day. Superintendent Judith Johnson is encouraging all parents to be involved in their child's activities.
"These are our children and we must care for them, nurture them and support them," Johnson said in a message to parents. "We must remember to celebrate their accomplishments. Every child in our community needs to know that we are counting on them to become active, productive, proud citizens of our very dynamic, culturally diverse democracy."
PTA meetings begin next week as well. On Monday, Sept. 10, the PTA of Grimes Elementary will convene. On Tuesday, Sept. 11, Graham Elementary will hold its elections for its PTA's executive board while the PTSA at Thornton High School will hold its first meeting of the school year.
Hamilton Elementary School's PTA meets on Thursday, Sept. 13, which will include the kick-off to its membership drive. The PTA at Longfellow Middle School will also meet on Thursday.
Longfellow Elementary School will hold an assembly for students and teachers on the school's code of conduct. First through fourth-graders will have the assembly on Monday, Sept. 10, while fifth and sixth-graders will take part on Tuesday, Sept. 11.
Grimes Elementary School will host "Bring Your Parent to School" Day on Tuesday, Sept. 12 and will hold an academic pep rally on Thursday, Sept. 14.
