In an effort to trim future school board budgets, the Mount Vernon Federation of Teachers has agreed to work with the city school district to lessen the rising mandated costs of teacher salaries and benefits, officials said.
All stakeholders have agreed to focus on district priorities and the fiscal challenges that students, parents and faculty alike face in the coming years.
The Mount Vernon Federation of Teachers has agreed to include a salary stop freeze and to contribute a greater amount for health insurance premium as part of the comprehensive agreement between the parties.
The organization is comprised of nearly 1,400 members that includes teachers, assistants and security personnel in the Mount Vernon School District.
In a joint statement, Jeff Yonkers, the president of the teacher’s union and Interim Superintendent Judith Johnson said that this was a big step toward passing the budget on the second vote.
“In an effort to support the district in getting the budget approved, the MVFT agrees to include a salary step freeze and to contribute a greater amount for health insurance premiums as part of a comprehensive agreement between the parties,” they said.
