MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – Following a successful first year at the helm of a rebuilding Mount Vernon School District, the Board of Education has unanimously approved to extend Superintendent Kenneth Hamilton ’s contract for three additional years.

Following an exhaustive two-year search to find the right person to take over the fledging district from interim Superintendent Judith Johnson, the Board of Education tabbed Hamilton in August last year.

Hamilton took over a tough situation in Mount Vernon, where students achieved among the lowest scores in the county on standardized tests. During his first year, Hamilton oversaw the beginning of a district-wide technology overhaul and helped administrators and faculty members adapt to the new Common Core Learning Standards. He has also reached out to the public in an attempt to repair ties and improve trust between the community and school district.

Board of Education President Elias Gootzeit praised Hamilton for his ability to hit the ground running and to adjust on the fly during a whirlwind first year.

“Transformative leadership must also have stability,” he said. “With Superintendent Hamilton leading the charge, we can support and build on the innovative programs we have begun.

According to the Board, since being appointed as superintendent last year, Hamilton ahs taken measures to improve the district and increase student outcomes at all levels. This year, he presented a $230 million “Fiscal Plan for Academic Excellence, which was approved and expanded several programs for students, with no tax levy increase on homeowners.

The Board unanimously approved the extension, which will keep Hamilton in charge through July 31, 2019; it otherwise would have expired next year.

“By showing unanimous support for my contract extension, the board is demonstrating its confidence in the direction of the Mount Vernon School District is going, and that direction is forward,” Hamilton said. “I hope to earn the community’s trust, as well, by focusing on improving student achievement through opportunities that meet our diverse student body’s needs.”
