Mount Vernon Schools Present 'The Wiz'

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – The Mount Vernon City School District presents "The Wiz," the super soul musical version of "The Wizard of Oz."

"The Wiz" is a musical with music and lyrics by Charlie Smalls and book by William F. Brown. It is a retelling of L. Frank Baum's "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz," in the context of African-American culture.

The Mount Vernon City School District continues its vision of nurturing the arts in schools with this production, featuring students from all three high schools in grades 9-12.

Featured cast includes Moneefa Parker, Mandela High School, as Dorothy; Lavon Williams, Mandela High School, as The Wiz; Calilah Hines, Mount Vernon High School, as The Scarecrow; Wade Murphy, Thornton High School, as The Tinman; Aaron Davis, Mount Vernon High School, as The Lion; Dominique Franco, Thornton High School, as Addaperle; Dionysia Placide, Thornton High School, as Evillene; and Brittney Clark, Mandela High School, as Glinda.

The performances will take place from April 17 through 19 at Mount Vernon High School, 100 California Road. Friday and Saturday, the performance is at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 4 p.m. Tickets cost $15 for adults and $10 for students.
