MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – Mount Vernon schools received $3.4 million more in state aid in the 2013-14 budget, which state legislators passed and Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed last Thursday.

The state allocated $69.3 million for the Mount Vernon School District, an increase of 4.9 percent from last year. These figures do not account for other education aid yet to be distributed, including $75 million in funding for new state initiatives .

They include grants for extended learning time and funding to make prekindergarten full time. Cuomo said the state would leave the decision of whether to extend prekindergarten to full time to individual school districts, but would incentivize them to increase the time students spend in school by covering 100 percent of the cost of any additional school time.

Funding that has not yet been distributed makes up 37 percent of the year-to-year increase in education aid. School aid totals $21.2 billion in the 2013-2014 budget. This is an increase of nearly $1 billion from last year.
