The Mentor Program Committee is developing a mentoring program for interns, which are classified as full-time district employees in their first or second year.

New teachers, and those given a new assignment in a different building, grade level or content area, will be eligible to participate. According to the committee, “a successful mentoring program is based on mutual respect and trust, ensuring a high degree of professionalism.”

The program is designed to encourage tenured teachers to share their knowledge and skills with the younger teachers who will be tasked with molding the minds of some of Mount Vernon’s most promising youth. The goal is developing cohesion and competent teachers who can work with any and all individuals they may come across in the classroom.

Mentors will meet with their interns formally at least once per week, observe their interns at least once per marking period and are expected to provide the necessary support for new teachers. Likewise, the intern is to observe the mentor and must remain in the program for a full year.

The Mentor Program's objectives include “providing appropriate staff development for mentors and the teachers being mentored, providing information related to curriculum and the Common Core Learning Standards and providing emotional support, guidance and assistance regarding adjustment to the work place, district policies, compliance expectations and state requirements.”
