MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – Mount Vernon and Tarrytown were among a dozen school districts that were named as model districts for saving taxpayers money while not diminishing the standards of education.

Mount Vernon schools will receive $2.42 million over the next three years after it saved taxpayers $2.3 million by reorganizing bus routes, consolidating central office positions and becoming more energy efficient.

Tarrytown schools will receive $167,202 over the next three years in recognition of $185,779 in savings following a bus route reorganization and reduction in transportation and administration costs.

In total, the 12 districts were awarded $9 million in education grants that will be paid out over the next three years. The districts were asked to describe savings in transportation, maintenance and administration in their bids for a grant.

“Our education system must become more efficient and direct spending away from the bureaucracy in the classroom,” Gov. Andrew Cuomo said while announcing the grant winners. “The 12 districts we are awarding stand out as leading examples and will serve as models for other districts across the state.”
