MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – A mural made by third-grade students at Holmes Elementary School in Mount Vernon was unveiled Thursday. May 29. The mural was part of an initiative with ArtsWestchester to combine academic subject matter and art.

Holmes was one of four schools to participate in creating the murals, which created imaginative, thoughtful works of art that incorporate the five food groups.

In each school, professional artists from ArtsWestchester’s teaching directory teamed with classroom teachers and a registered dietician. A cross-curriculum approach was used, integrating science concepts with themes of increased physical activity and healthy eating concepts, and such art concepts as color and design choices, measuring, scaling, and the preservation of art. The permanent murals will be an ongoing reminder within the school community to keep healthy nutrition at the forefront of their lifestyles.

At Holmes, the students there were under the guidance of artist Pedro Nel Ospina. They created a three-panel piece with the theme, "Where Healthy Food Comes From." Two pillars inside the cafeteria are also painted with images reminding children that eating healthy food will give them plenty of “good” energy, and an additional mural above the serving line expresses the theme, "Be Healthy. Eat Right."

ArtsWestchester’s nutrition mural project was made possible with major support from The Aetna Foundation and additional support from Stop & Shop, The Staples Foundation and Atlantic Bank.
