Mount Vernon Schedules Back-To-School Backpack Giveaway

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – In an effort to assist every student in Mount Vernon, schools and local officials are teaming up for the fourth annual “Back-to-School Backpack Giveaway.”

Mount Vernon students in need will be outfitted with all the necessary supplies needed to start the school year at the backpack giveaway.

Each year, as the school year approaches, the district collects standard “back to school” items, such as pencils, rulers and notebooks, which are then distributed to Mount Vernon students in need.

According to officials, “this year’s theme is ‘all in.’ Together, we can be the great city the people and youth of Mount Vernon deserve,” they stated when announcing the event.

This year, a record number of local organizations and businesses have teamed together to collect items and monetary donations, which will be delivered to students between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 29 in Hartley Park.

Donations are still being collected for the giveaway. The district is seeking possible volunteers for the week of Aug. 24 that can “donate an hour or two of (their) time to pack backpacks or distribute them. Packing will take place at the William H. Holmes Elementary School between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. that week. Those interested can sign up online.

Supply lists for each of the district’s 12 schools can be found here.

“Many of the hardworking families in this community will struggle to provide their child with the tools necessary to start the school year,” Hamilton said before his first drive last year. “If through this drive, we can help with that burden by providing a new backpack, some notebooks, pens and pencils, that is one less thing our families need to worry about.”
