The proposed charter school, the Friendship Tech Charter School of Excellence, would focus on STEM – science, technology engineering and math – education, and would become just the third charter school in the county in the county.

As part of the ratifying process, the Mount Vernon School District is required to hold a public hearing to collect comments regarding the proposal. That hearing will take place at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 15, at the Education Center on North Columbus Avenue.

New York Education law states “Prior to the issuance, revision, or renewal of a charter, the school district in which the charter school is located shall hold a public hearing to solicit comments from the community in connection with the foregoing. Such hearing shall be held within the community potentially impacted by the proposed charter school.”

“In addition, such school districts shall be given an opportunity to comment on the proposed charter to the charter entity and such charter entity shall consider any comments raised and submit any such comments to the board of regents with the application for issuance, revision, or renewal of a charter.”

Mount Vernon has a fickle history with local charter schools. A few years ago, when the Amani Public Charter School was approved, the district sued the state Education Department and the school to veto the approval. The sides eventually reached a settlement last year.

Those that are unable to attend the public hearing can offer their comments to District Clerk Richard McCormack via email at rmccormack@mtvernoncsd.org with “Friendship Tech Charter School of Excellence” in the subject line.
