MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – Inspired by a trip to Thailand last year, the Mount Vernon Ambassadors have been hard at work on their Pull-Tab Collection Campaign, collecting soda can tabs that will benefit the elderly population there.

Since kicking off the campaign on March 3, the Ambassadors have collected 152,587 tabs, which will be used to make artificial limbs, couplings and joints for the limbs, as well as canes and walkers for the elderly.

Columbus Elementary School led the charge, collecting 41,422 tabs alone – which earned them a $250 bonus - that will be shipped to the Prostheses Foundation in Thailand this week. The Mount Vernon Ambassadors visited the foundation in April 2013 and vowed to help provide medical care in any way possible.

According to Josephine Kirkland-Hudson, a social worker at Longfellow Elementary School, this year’s drive was just the beginning of the relationship between the Mount Vernon School District and Prostheses Foundation.

“Whether you donated 1 or 1,000, every tab will help to save a life,” she noted. “We’re looking forward to doing this again next year, because we can affect change.”
