The district is collecting standard items, such as pencils, rulers and notebooks, which will be distributed to students in need. Monetary donations also are being accepted in increments of $25, which will support five students.

The goal of the backpack giveaway is to rally the community to help supply and outfit 10,000 students in the city. The district also needs volunteers that can help organize and facilitate the giveaway from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 31 at Hartley Park.

A complete list of supplies that are needed can be found online, and those interested in volunteering can do so here. Supplies and donations will be accepted until Aug. 23. Interim Superintendent Judith Johnson already has placed a $500 donation, and the First Presbyterian Church has pledged $100, which will help as many as 20 students.

At the Backpack Giveaway, students of all grade levels will be treated to free food, games and entertainment. Those in need also will be presented with a backpack of their own, chock-full of new school supplies for the year.
