Titled "Educational Inequality: A New York State Regent's View," the 7 p.m. program is open to the public and co-hosted by Westchester for Change, an all-volunteer grass-roots organization.

Westchester for Change invited local elected officials, local school members and PTA leadership. The forum is open to all and free.

For all the public concern about testing, teacher evaluations and curriculum regarding New York public schools, a larger issue is often forgotten --- educational inequality, organizers said. Education is supposed to be the great equalizers, they said, but too many children don't have access to quality education.

Johnson plans to talk about characteristics that define public school education inequities and implications if left unaddressed, organizers said. Also, strategies for change will be discussed.

Johnson is a former deputy assistant secretary and acting assistant secretary for elementary and secondary education in the federal Department of Education in the Clinton administration. She is also a former superintendent of both the Peekskill and Mount Vernon public schools.

“I am unrelenting in my commitment to public education and the success of each child in our public school system," Johnson said in a statement. "I look forward to speaking at this Westchester for Change forum.”

Co-sponsors of this event include The Ethical Culture Society of Westchester; Citizen Action of New York and Public Policy and Education Fund of New York; WESPAC; White Plains City Democratic Committee; Scarsdale Democratic Town Committee.
