'Dreamgirls' Dazzles In Mount Vernon High School Auditorium

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. -- Mount Vernon City School District’s "Dreamgirls" cast sang and acted for audiences on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, taking them on a journey from being young and hopeful to stardom in their final act.

The Dreams – Effie White (played by Dionysia Placide), Deena Jones (played by Nala Parkes), Lorrell Robinson (played by Miriam Parker), and, later, Michelle Morris (played by Jai-la Evans) – as well as singer Jimmy Early (played by Jahari White) are steered through the years by record executive Curtis Taylor Jr. (played by Courtney Taylor-Donville Jr.) and manager Marty Madison (played by Dominique Foxworth). 

The performances featured a cast and stage crew of 30 students from Mount Vernon, Thornton and Mandela/Zollicoffer high schools. 

The Arts at Mount Vernon production was produced and directed by Evelyn Collins, the district’s director of Arts and Gifted and Talented Education. 

The musical is based upon the show business aspirations and successes of R and B acts such as The Supremes, The Shirelles, James Brown, Jackie Wilson and others.
