The $60 million development, tentatively scheduled to be completed by the fall of next year, will include 159 units for rent, 19,500-square-feet of retail space, and a municipal parking garage. Developers have also promised a $3 million rehabilitation of the Sydney Avenue garage.
The project has been in the works since 2011, but developers had difficulty securing funds from certain parties. It is part of a larger master plan to revitalize downtown Mount Vernon.
Once completed, the LaPorte development will feature hardwood floors in its residences, energy star appliances, a children’s play area, lounge, computer labs, a rooftop green space and a laundry space.
According to Mount Vernon Mayor Ernest Davis, the city is utilizing federal HOME and CDBG funds. It is estimated that the project will create more than 300 jobs for locals.
“This has been a long time coming, and everyone is excited about the opportunities that this project will usher into the city,” he said in a statement. “The development will serve as a gateway to a revitalized Mount Vernon downtown and is the first phase of development in the master plan to revitalize the area around Hartley Park.”
