MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. - Having listened to the community’s comments regarding the proposed transit-oriented Mount Vernon West development , city officials have scheduled a public hearing to discuss the steps moving forward.
Last month, the Mount Vernon West Rezoning Draft Generic Environmental Impact Statement (DGEIS) was made available to the public for review, with the City Council soliciting comments and questions from the community.
The Mount Vernon City Council will now be hosting a public hearing regarding the draft scope of the DGEIS at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 24 in their chamber at City Hall. They will then be accepting additional written public comments through Monday, March 9.
The DGEIS outlines and evaluates “potential impacts associated with the adoption of amendments to the Mount Vernon Zoning code to create the Mount Vernon West form-based zoning district.”
Amendments to zoning code may be necessary, as officials envision a viable longterm plan to revitalize the city with a transit-oriented development, centered around the Mount Vernon West Metro-North Station. The proposal calls for more than 3,000 new residential units and more than 250,0000-square-feet of retail space.
Among the city officials’ stated goals include positioning Mount Vernon West as a concentrated investment area, strengthening the Mount Vernon Avenue gateway into Yonkers and exploring high-density options through re-zoning and the assembly of vacant buildings and underutilized sites.
“A defining, and perhaps the most important feature for the future success of the area, is the Mount Vernon West Metro-North train station,” the DGEIS states. “The proposed zoning incorporates the principles of both transit oriented development and form-based zoning into a new zoning district designed to precisely meet the city’s goals for the area.”
