MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – Seniors looking for convenient, affordable living space in Mount Vernon have a new option after an apartment building opening its doors Wednesday.

The Fredrichs Residence consists of 61 studio and one-bedroom affordable housing units for the elderly, constructed on the 36-acre campus of the Wartburg.

“This opening is a proud moment for the new residents, their families and for those of us who provide services on the Wartburg campus,” said David Gentner, president at the Wartburg. “It fills a dire need for affordable housing for the elderly.”

So far, 20 out of 200 applicants from throughout the East Coast have been accepted, with some moving their belongings into the $17 million building late last month. There are 10 studio apartments and 51 one-bedroom locations.

Rent will range from $726 to $1,009 per month. Each of the five types of apartments will have maximum incomes for one- and two-person households. Applicants must each be over the age of 62.

The 55,000-square-foot building includes free parking, elevators and individually controlled heat and air conditioning. All apartments are handicap accessible, and the building features a fitness center, library and video intercoms.

In addition to those amenities, the Fredrichs Residence includes assisted living facilities, adult day services and a long-term nursing facility. A $31 million short-term rehabilitation center is scheduled to open in July.
