MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. The Mount Vernon Planning Board heard a revised proposal Wednesday night to convert 15 S. 5th Ave. to a combined senior-living facility and a campus for Westchester Community College.
Architect Nima Badely was back before the planning board to explain the changes made to the project at the planning boards request. One of the recommendations from the planning board was how to arrange both existing and to-be-installed street lights and trees along South 5th Avenue. Badely said that two existing light poles in good condition will be kept while four additional street lights will be added on South 5th Avenue and two trees will be planted behind the building on South 6th Avenue.
We met with the planning department and discussed the best way to arrange the trees and the street lights, Badely said.
Another adjustment made to the project includes building an open fence similar to the fence that surrounds the parking lot for Chase Bank across the street. Badely said that this type of fence was chosen on the recommendation of the planning department to keep it consistent with other fencing in the area.
Badely said that a two-foot high concrete curb will be built along the parking lot to prevent cars from accidentally going forward into a playground that it faces. The parking lot, which will have 23 spaces for residents of the building and faculty of the college, will also have a drop-off area for the handicapped as recommended by the planning board.
After much deliberation we are also going to add a crosswalk too, Badely said. Our final thought is that this parking lot is for long-term use, not for any students to park for a few hours.
Planning Board Member Marcus Griffith said that its possible the proposal could be approved by the planning board in November.
