Putnam Ready For Memorial Day Celebrations

PUTNAM COUNTY, N.Y. -- Putnam residents will have a chance to show their appreciation for those who served our country by attending the Mahopac annual parade or honoring a veteran with a flag.

Putnam County remembered those who have served and those who gave their lives in military service on Memorial Day, with a parade and a ceremony in Mahopac.

Carmel: The annual Row of Honor Flag ceremony kicked off last weekend, but residents can still honor a veteran by purchasing a flag for $100 that will be added to the flags flying on the shores of Lake Gleneida until Flag Day, June 14.  A trip to the lake to see the display is a perfect way to spend Memorial Day. To order a flag, call 845-808-1620. 

Friday, May 26, Saturday, May 27, Sunday, May 28:

Putnam County: Joint Veterans Council-John Morris Memorial Watchfire Vigil, each night 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Opening Ceremony Friday the 26 at 7 p.m. Flag Retirement throughout the vigil.

Sunday, May 28:

Kent: VFW Post 1374 & Auxiliary, Carmel & American Legion Post 270- 9:30 a.m. ceremony at the monument on Terryhill Road; 11 a.m.  ceremony at Post Home 32 Gleneida Ave, Carmel. Refreshments to follow.

Mahopac: The hamlet of Mahopac will host a parade beginning at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Clark Place and Route 6N. The parade will proceed to the monument on East Lake Boulevard where a ceremony will be held at 11 a.m.

Monday May 29: 

Putnam Valley: VFW Post 391, Putnam Valley, 11 a.m. ceremony Putnam Valley Town Hall; noon ceremony Lake Peekskill Monument (Chester Place); 1 p.m. ceremony Post Home 153 Oscawanna Lake Road. Refreshments to follow.

Brewster: VFW Post 672 host parade from Brewster Fire House to Electrozone Field at 11 a.m. Ceremony at Electrazone Field following the parade. Light lunch to follow at Post Home on Peaceable Hill Road.

Cold Spring: VFW Post 2362 and American Legion Post 275 host parade at 9 a.m. at 85 Main St., Cold Spring Village Hall, to Veterans Memorial on Mains Sts, then onto the Old Cold Spring Cemetery (Revolutionary War), then to Nelsonville Town Hall. Ceremony at each location. Refreshments to follow at American Legion/VFW Hall on Cedar Street.

Mahopac: VFW Post & Ladies Auxiliary 5491 Mahopac & American Legion Post 1080 host parade from Clarke Place to Veterans Memorial Park on East Lake Blvd. at 10 a.m. Ceremony to follow at the monument.

Mahopac: American Legion Post 1080 host ceremony at noon following VFW Ceremony at 333 Buckshollow Road. Refreshments to follow at VFW Post home, 154 East Lake Blvd & at the Legion Post 333 Buckshollow Rd.

Patterson: American Legion Post 1542, host walk from post home to the monument on Rt. 311 for ceremony beginning at 10 a.m. Refreshments to follow.

Putnam Lake: VFW Post 9257& Ladies Auxiliary & AMVET Post 1111  host parade and ceremony the monument at the intersection of Fairfield and Haviland Drive. Begins at 10 a.m. the Castle Building located on Haviland Drive. Refreshments to be served at VFW 9257, located at 4 Fairfield Dr, Patterson.

Somers: (Somers post is part of the Putnam County Council VFW) VFW Post 8013 host its annual Memorial Day Parade and Remembrance ceremony. Step off 10 a.m. from Somers Middle School to Ivandell Cemetery.
