Police In Dutchess Get $250K For Advanced Rifles, Protective Gear

DUTCHESS COUNTY, N.Y. -- In the event of a terrorist attack or an active shooter incident, police departments across Dutchess County will be equipped with advanced protective gear thanks to a $249,930 grant from the state Division of Criminal Justice Services’ Police Protective Equipment Program.

Dutchess County Sheriff Butch Anderson said the new equipment will allow his department to be better prepared for emergency situations.

The Dutchess County Sheriff's Office, along with several local agencies, were selected to receive the funding for equipment that includes advanced ballistic helmets and vests and DCJS approved patrol rifles, typically used in active shooter incidents, terrorist attacks, and other criminal events.

As part of county’s continuing efforts to engage in shared services initiatives, the Dutchess County Executive’s Office took the lead in submitting the application on behalf of eight police agencies.

“We continue advancing our shared services efforts and with this grant, we provide our law enforcement officers with the protection and resources they need to keep them safe,” said Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro.

Police agencies were assessed and selected for funding based on the equipment needs of their department. Departments receiving the funding include:

  • Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office -- $107,640
  • City of Poughkeepsie Police -- $39,900
  • Town of East Fishkill Police Department -- $10,560
  • Town of Fishkill Police Department -- $4,440
  • Town of Hyde Park Police Department -- $3,570
  • Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department -- $75,360
  • Village of Fishkill Police Department -- $6,060
  • Village of Rhinebeck Police Department -- $2,400

“This funding will allow us to continue with our efforts to provide training and equipment needed during a possible catastrophic event in order to protect our brave men and women in uniform and our residents," said Dutchess County Sheriff Adrian “Butch” Anderson.
