YORKTOWN, N.Y. - The Yorktown Town Board voted Tuesday night to remove the residency requirements for community volunteers to use the town's swimming pools in Shrub Oak and Junior Lake.
Council member Dave Paganelli pushed for the waiver, citing the work that volunteers do on behalf of Yorktown. A fee was not established by the board, but a discount will be offered.
"It will be positive revenue, and we're not overcrowded," said Supervisor Michael Grace.
Council member Nick Bianco, who voted against the measure because he said he wasn't provided with any specific proposal or figures, suggested the town also establish a fee for nonresidents from neighboring municipalities who might be interested in cooling off at one of Yorktown's swimming facilities.
"Our pools at Shrub Oak and Junior Lake are just beautiful," said Council member Terrence Murphy.
Meanwhile, the board also approved a request from Parks and Recreation Superintendent Brian Gray to go out to bid for a new pitching machine, which is estimated to cost about $14,000.
Gray said the town only has one pitching machine that is used seven days a week at 14 different fields.
"It's important that we get one of these for fall baseball," said Gray, who noted that a 1988 model the town had could no longer be used.
