MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – The winners in the Mount Vernon Democratic primary in September, incumbents Yuhanna Edwards, Roberta Apuzzo and former councilman Marcus Griffith will formally assume their spots on the City Council on Tuesday.

The three Democrats are unopposed on the Election Day ballot on Tuesday, and will join acting Council President Deborah Reynolds and Councilman Richard Thomas.

The three veteran politicians easily won the primary in September, with Apuzzo (27 percent of votes), Edwards (23 percent) and Griffith (20 percent) distancing themselves from challengers Andrea Bailey, Damon Jones, Maria Caraballo (11 percent each) and Damaris Mone (7 percent).

At the time, residents were not overly pleased with the appointments, despite the lopsided results.

“To say that people are disappointed is an understatement,” Fourth Street resident Bernie Carr said outside of City Hall. “I guess those three had more support than we realized. They also threw more money at it than any other candidate.”

The newly elected City Council members will each serve a four-year term under Mayor Ernest Davis.
